Official Preliminary to Miss Texas and Miss America Scholarship Competitions

Miss San Antonio America 1924, Eileen Henry / Katherine Hensley
Local Pageant Information:

Palace Theater, 325 Alamo Plaza, San Antonio, Texas
May 15, 1924

Overview:

Research on our 1924 Miss San Antonio reveiled two individuals.  Eileen Henry appears to have won the title of Miss San Antonio locally and Katherine Hensley competed in Atlantic City as Miss San Antonio.

A local Bathing Revue to select Miss San Antonio for the "5th Annual Bathing Girl Revue" in Galveston was held in the Palace Theater on May 15, 1924.  No records of a winner in the Palace Theater Revue has been found however Eileen Henry is listed in many articles as "Miss San Antonio" competing in Galveston alongside 3 other candidates from San Antonio; Vera Simpson, Lucille Ruth and Katherine Hensley.

Vera Simpson, Lucille Ruth and Katherine Hensley were never listed as "Miss San Antonio" in the Galveston Bathing Girl Revue.  Katherine Hensley won the trip to the Miss America Pageant (Inter-City Beauty Contest) and was referred to as "Miss San Antonio" while competing in Atlantic City.

Family lore had it that Katherine Hensley won the "Miss Texas" title twice.  This would be true if the Miss America Pageant (Inter-City Beauty Contest) held preliminary state competitions as they do today.  However in the early years, contestants competed with a city or state title.  In 1924, three individuals from Texas competed in Atlantic City; Miss Beaumont, Miss Dallas and Katherine Hensley as Miss San Antonio.  There was no official "Miss Texas" until 1937.

Katherine Hensley Accolades:

• 3rd Place at Galveston Pageant
• Silver Loving Cup "Most Beautiful in Western District" at Atlantic City
