Profile:

Andrea Bruno (Darwin) was crowned Miss San Antonio on January 13, 2001 at the age of 20.  Formerly, she served on the Miss Fiesta San Antonio Court in 1999.  It was through this experience that she was inspired to compete for the Miss San Antonio title.  It was her first and only attempt at competing locally in the Miss America Pageant system.  She was one of 20 contestants vying for the title, making it the largest Miss San Antonio pageant in recent history.

A San Antonio native, Andrea was honored to represent her beloved hometown and viewed her title as a unique opportunity to make a positive difference in the lives of others.  Throughout her year of service, she reached thousands of at-risk youth as a mentor, tutor and motivational speaker at various schools and after school programs.

She was a dedicated advocate and volunteer for the San Antonio Youth Literacy project, Special Olympics and The Door in the Wall Organization for people with disabilities.  Likewise, she was deeply committed to the elderly, particularly the remarkable people of the Greatest Generation, often visiting local nursing homes and assisted living facilities.

Andrea relished in the rich traditions of Fiesta San Antonio as a member of Fiesta Royalty - a unique facet of the Miss San Antonio America title.  Her participation in the multitude of Fiesta events, receptions, school visits and parades proved to be one of the most exciting aspects of her year.

Andrea is a classically trained vocalist who frequently performed "The Star-Spangled Banner" and a variety of musical genres at appearances in the San Antonio area and beyond. She performed "The Glory of Love" for her talent piece at the Miss San Antonio Pageant as a heartfelt tribute to her late childhood friend, and the torch song, “Misty,” at the Miss Texas Pageant.  During Miss Texas week, she was invited to sing "Unchained Melody" at the then-popular Johnnie High Country Music Revue in Arlington, Texas.  This was a special highlight of her Miss Texas experience.

In her final performance as Miss San Antonio, she sang a solemn rendition of "America the Beautiful" to honor the victims of the September 11th attacks.  This national tragedy was a poignant awakening of the attack on liberty and became a significant turning point for our nation and world.

Andrea is a graduate of The University of Texas at Austin.  She is married to Dr. Andrew Darwin and they are the proud parents of two children.

Miss Texas 1937 was the first year the Miss Texas Organization sent a representative to the Miss America Pageant (Inter-City Beauty Contest) in Atlantic City.  It wasn't until the 1964 that the national pageant required all of the national entries to be a state preliminary winner.  Before 1964 many contestants competed with city titles along side contestants with state titles like Miss San Antonio with Miss Texas in 1937. Miss Fort Worth 1937, Alice Lucille Emerick, was crowned Miss Texas 1937 in the 1st Miss Texas Pageant held in August 1937.  Miss Emerick finished 1st runner-up in the Miss America Pageant. Miss America Miss Bertrand Island 1937, Betty Cooper, was crowned Miss America 1937 during the 11th Miss America Pageant (Inter-City Beauty Contest) held at the Steel Pier in Atlantic City, New Jersey on September 11, 1937. Local Pageant Information:

    (Research In Progress)

    Profile:

    * The Miss San Antonio 1933 title is filled with controversy.

There is no evidence that Billie Elwood held the Miss San Antonio 1933 title, however, she was photographed as "Miss Texas" in 1933 and since she was listed as being from San Antonio it is assumed that she was Miss San Antonio in 1933.

The photograph shows Billie Elwood as "Miss Texas" alongside "Miss Oklahoma", "Miss Kansas" and "Miss Missouri" christening a train car at the St. Louis Union Station while en route to Atlantic City to participate in the Miss America Pageant in 1933.

Billie Elwood, did not participate in the 1933 Miss America Pageant.  An official panoramic photograph of the Miss America contestants shows "Miss Kansas" and "Miss Missouri" but not "Miss Oklahoma" or "Miss Texas."  "Miss Oklahoma" withdrew to undergo an emergency appendectomy and a 1936 exposé states that Billie Elwood learned that the "Miss Texas" title bestowed on her by a questionable pageant promotional director was irregular and, on her own accord, returned home without participating in the Miss America Pageant.

It's highly unlikely that the promotional director randomly chose Billie as "Miss Texas."  No records have been found of a local competition being held to select Miss San Antonio America 1933 so we are assuming she was chosen Miss Texas because she previously held the Miss San Antonio title in 1932 in another pageant system.

There are no other names associated with San Antonio or Texas involving Miss America in 1933.  Billie Elwood was celebrated as a former titleholder during a Miss San Antonio pageant in the 1990's and she is officially considered Miss San Antonio America 1933.

Billie Elwood (Mrs. Weinbrenner) later joined the U.S. Army in 1956 and retired a Major after 20 years of service in the WAC (Women's Army Corps).

    Profile:

Florence Zoeller won the title of Miss San Antonio for the "International Pageant of Pulchritude" in Galveston, Texas.  The pageant was held in the Majestic Theater but not the one most people currently know as the Majestic Theater.  The State Theater was original named Majestic until the fifth and current Majestic opened on Houston Street.

Because of the Galveston pageant's past association with the Miss America Pageant (Inter-City Beauty Contest), we consider Florence Zoeller as the official Miss San Antonio America in 1927.

Florence Zoeller did not compete at the Miss America Pageant (Inter-City Beauty Contest) in Atlantic City.

Other Miss San Antonios Miss Lucille Klaus also had the title of "Miss San Antonio" in 1927.  Her title was associated with a vaudeville tour titled "Miss America" which toured across America.  Her title was not associated with the Miss America Pageant. Norma Nelson was also given the title of "Miss San Antonio" in 1927 for the First Annual LaSalle Pageant.  It was also not associated with the Miss America Pageant. Regional Pageant The old "Bathing Girl Revue", now the "2nd Annual International Pageant of Pulchritude" in Galveston, Texas was no longer associated with the Miss America Pageant (Inter-City Beauty Contest).  It became a separate event awarding the titles of Miss United States and Miss Universe. Miss Dallas, who lost in the International Pageant of Pulchritude, competed and finished in second place in the Miss America Pageant (Inter-City Beauty Contest).  Because of this we are considering the 1927 International Pageant of Pulchritude contestants as potential Miss America contestants. 1926 Pageant Fun Facts
Regional Pageant In the previous two years the annual "Bathing Girl Revue" in Galveston sent the top three winners to Atlantic City to compete in the Miss America Pageant (Inter-City Beauty Contest).  In 1926 the Galveston, Texas pageant became the new "International Pageant of Pulchritude" which was a pageant open to contestants from around the world.  It also retained the name "7th Annual Bathing Girl Revue."  However, the winner no longer won a trip to Atlantic City but instead became "Miss Universe." Miss Dallas, Rosebud Blondell, who finished in 12th place in the Bathing Girl Revue competed in the Miss America Pageant (Inter-City Beauty Contest) as Miss Dallas.  She most likely paid her own way or received funding from her city for the trip to Atlantic City.  In spite of the fact that the "Bathing Girl Revue" no longer awarded trips to Atlantic City and that it was never officially affiliated with the Miss America Pageant (Inter-City Beauty Contest), contestants and cities may have assumed it had some type of association with the Miss America Pageant (Inter-City Beauty Contest).  Because of this, we are considering the 1926 Bathing Girl Revue contestants as potential Miss America contestants. Miss America Miss Tulsa 1926, Norma Smallwood, was crowned Miss America 1926 during the 6th Miss America Pageant (Inter-City Beauty Contest) held at the Million Dollar Pier in Atlantic City, New Jersey on September 10, 1926. Other Facts Miss Smallwood was also the first to win the new award "Most Beautiful Girl in Evening Gown."

A second, earlier selection event was a Bathing Revue during the Water Carnival held at San Pedro Park on April 25, 1925.  No records have been found on the Miss San Antonio winner at the Water Carnival.

The two contestants from San Antonio who competed in the annual Galveston Revue for a chance to win a trip to Atlantic City have consistently been listed as "Miss San Antonio, Virgina Wheat" and "Pearl Moses from San Antonio."  It is possible Miss Moses was the winner of the Water Carnival Revue.  Based on available documentation Miss San Antonio America 1925 was Virginia Wheat.

Neither Virginia Wheat nor Pearl Moses competed in the Inter-City Beauty Contest in Atlantic City.

Family lore had it that Katherine Hensley won the "Miss Texas" title twice.  This would be true if the Miss America Pageant (Inter-City Beauty Contest) held preliminary state competitions as they do today.  However in the early years, contestants competed with a city or state title.  In 1924, three individuals from Texas competed in Atlantic City; Miss Beaumont, Miss Dallas and Katherine Hensley as Miss San Antonio.  There was no official "Miss Texas" until 1937.
